We are asked often how many T-shirts are needed for a T-shirt quilt and the answer isn't a simple one. There are a few ways that the final size can be controlled such as minimizing sashing (the frame between shirts) or reducing borders. The opposite is also true. We can make sashing and borders bigger if we want the quilt bigger because there aren't a lot of T-shirts. These are examples of the details you can leave to us!
There are many ways of designing a T-shirt quilt. The most common method is cutting all of the shirts the same size and arranging the quilt with 5 shirts over and 6 shirts down. Typically, all shirts are cut the same size as the largest design. This isn't our favorite way of designing a quilt because it often leaves a lot of blank T-shirt weighing the quilt down. It also means that we could be cutting some of the design off on some shirts. Some clients like the uniformity this layout offers so we offer this layout at the client's request.
Our favorite way of designing a T-shirt quilt is by cutting each shirt down to the design size. That means if a design is only on the breast pocket, we will cut the shirt to the size of the design. Then, we create the layout more like a puzzle. With this method, you will not see any obvious rows or columns. This makes the quilt much more interesting and also allows us to use many more shirts while keeping the overall size down.
We use only quilt-shop quality fabric which helps ensure your quilt will be treasured for years and years to come!
